Wargasm/Harpy/Bex - Corporation, Sheffield, 18th September 2024

The first performer of the night is Bex, an explosion of colour and rage with well crafted songs. They are bass-driven, punkish and loud but in-between the screams, Bex has a good voice.

She was also a support act to Wargasm when they last played Sheffield in 2023 and her confidence on stage and the way she interacts with the crowd has increased even more so since then. A bubble machine that covers the first few rows of head-bangers, the obligatory stage-dive, and then a final blood-curdling scream/laugh at the end of the 30 minute set makes for a memorable start to the evening.

Bex is due to play Download in June 2025, the second year in a row she will appear at the festival. She is clearly doing something right.

Next up is solo artist, Harpy. She strides onto the stage, a dark presence in black boots and a long stylish coat, which she removes after the first song to reveal her leather dominatrix style outfit.

We are fortunate to catch her tonight at the Corporation as it is the only concert on Wargasm’s ‘Club Shit,’ UK tour that she is down as a support act. She will join them the following month in Europe as the tour continues overseas.

Harpy has a powerful vocal range and with stand-out songs such as 'Not My God Anymore' and 'Medicine'. The industrial goth music reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails sounds mesmerising. I later spot Harpy stood near the merch stand where a fan asks if she will walk over his body as he lies on the floor. She is happy to oblige.

Set List: Venom/Death Rattle/Fukstar/Minigun/Rage All Over/Pyro Pyro/70% Dead/Modern Love/Bang Ya Head/Ride The Thunder/D.R.I.L.D.O/Feral/Spit/Do It So Good

The main concert room at the Corporation is now full and suitably warmed up and buzzing for the arrival of tonight’s headliners, Wargasm.

Since they last played Sheffield in April 2023 at The Foundry, they have released their debut album 'Venom' in October of that year and barely stopped touring, including all the big Summer rock festivals culminating in supporting Korn on two UK dates in August. Having previously supported Limp Bizkit, they have truly been in the nu-metal spotlight for the last few years.

This is the first night of a UK/Europe tour playing club venues and I am delighted they have chosen the Corporation. For those unfamiliar with Wargasm, they are Sam Matlock, (Vocals/Guitar) and Milkie Way (Vocals/Bass) from the UK and they formed in 2018.

Sam is the Son of Sex Pistols Bass Guitarist, Glen Matlock and Milkie is an ex-model and photographer turned awesome musician. They are backed up with an energetic band featuring Adam Breeze (Drums) and Adam Crilly (Keyboards/Percussion).

Sam and Milkie trade vocals throughout their mega intense songs such as opening numbers 'Venom' and 'Death Rattle', both from their debut album. They also include all three singles taken from the album in tonight’s set: 'Do It So Good', 'Modern Love', and the catchy 'Bang Ya Head' which features Fred Durst on guest vocals on the album track.

In between Sam crowd-surfing from the stage to practically the entire length of the room, (nobody dropped him!), they play crowd favourites 'Fukstar', 'Pyro Pyro' and 'D.R.I.L.D.O' all from their 'Explict: The MiXXXtape E.P'.

All tonight’s set are original songs which shows the depth of their catalogue, although I was slightly disappointed that they didn’t play their awesome version of NERD’s 'Lapdance' which was a stand out song from the last time I saw them in concert.

Wargasm now have a universally well received debut album under their belts and continue to be one of rock/metals most exciting live acts. They are most definitely a band you would not get tired of seeing again and again.
