Nashville Pussy/The City Kids/Coyote Mad Seeds/Sour Tusk – Corporation, Sheffield, Tuesday May 10th, 2022

Set List: Mission From God/Kick It In/Hail Hail Rock 'N' Roll/Proud Mary/Drinking Man/Ramones/Crazy/Gay Bar.

Well this is one of those shows I had been looking forward to as soon as it was announced and even more so when I found out Sheffield's very own 'Sour Tusk' were one of the support bands for the night. The band themselves had been relishing the fact of being on the bill with some of their heroes – Drummer Nic's especially and had done plenty of promo for the show one way or another.

They had an early start of around 6.45pm which ain't exactly Rock 'N' Roll with a very small handful of people present to enjoy their mental brutality, crazy camaraderie and musical cacophony that borderlines somewhere between Motorhead and the criminally insane with lavish amounts of energy and supreme talent throughout.

Nice to see a new Schecter played by Jake Johnson as well – nice touch mate alongside the big shade-wearing coolness of Neil Charlesworth while Mr. Rudd is still the noisy obnoxious Heavy Metal nutter that he ever was up on that cool ass kit.

Entertaining folk who kept arriving with originals new and old plus a few choice covers, they appeared to have a good time up there delivering cuts like the freshly dried 'Hail Hail Rock 'N' Roll' or the Alcoholic Awareness number 'Drinking Man'.

They finished it off with Electric Six's 'Gay Bar' that always gets folk going for it one way or another! Keep your eyes peeled to social media since the boys have a brand new album out soon that'll be insulting your ears furtherly. Only kidding guys, I'm really looking forward to it and everybody else should be too!

Set List: Jaded Son/Extremis/Voices/Wish You Well/Dirty Water/No Way.

Next up Coyote Mad Seeds, another local band who I have seen go from strength to strength and master their hard edged riff-friendly crafted metal over the past few years. There seems to be quite a few more folk I all of a sudden... because it's getting a bit later right and folk have had chance to go home their tea I suppose...

Anyway, they coshered the crowd with their metal material and could do no wrong and there were quite a few familiar faces who always love to see 'em too, lapping up their older stuff like the unnerving opening rocker 'Jaded Son', the uptempo 'Extremis' and newer songs like 'Wish You Well'.

They please the people in the small room, giving it all they got in their short six song strong set.

Best Of You/Alone/It Should Have Been You/Heartbreak/All I Want/Mazel Tov Cocktail/Rats!/You Get Nothing/Round And A(Round).

JJ and the boys turn the crowd into an utter frenzy with their abrasive kinda punkish sound, working everyone up into a rabid froth of anarchy and overall creating a very enthusiastic bunch of people in the small room. It's a wonder that they have any energy left for the next band up.

Each member has a microphone which ain't a bad thing so there are plenty of harmonies and backing bawling during their time on the stage with one of the numbers featuring Berty on lead vocals, giving Mr. Watts a break to concentrate on his guitar-work alongside the incredible Dennis Post!

Standouts of the set included the opening ballsy starter that is 'Best Of You' about not letting those in control drain the hell out of you; the gutsy rocker 'It Should Have Been You' or similar styled 'All I Want' or full-on drinking cut 'Round And Around' that finishes the proceedings.

Set List: Struttin' Cock/Piece Of Ass/Wrong Side Of A Gun/Gonna Hitchhike.../Come On/Rub It To Death/Go Home And Die/She Keeps Me Comin' And I Keep Coming Back/CCKMP/Going Down Swinging/Pill Bill/Til The Meat Falls Off The Bone/Why Why Why/Pussy Is Not A Dirty Word/Keep On F*ckin'/Go Motherf*ck*r Go.

Now this is a band I have fancied seeing for a long, long time so I definitely wasn't missing their show in Sheffield for anything – full on authentic Southern sounding Motorhead meets Cowpunk without a ballad to be had during their entire performance that started with the deep throbbin' 'Struttin' Cock'.

As tight as and as hot as hell itself, the Pussy mean serious business with their current line-up being the long-standing husband and wife team of Blaine Cartwright (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar) & Ruyter Suys (Lead Guitar) & new members Bonnie Buitrago (Bass) and Dusty Watson on Drums (who comes from The Sonics). They deliver a wild bunch of fun songs about beer, sex, fights 'n' bars etc talk about a fun time ensuing.

A band who at times simply wear you out just buy watching them especially Ruyter who hardly keeps still for a second – giving it her all on those gritzy Angus Young meets Phil Campbell like riffs of every nugget, I mean note that's humanly possible and that her SG can take not to mention her hair thrashing all over the place on regular occurrences – wouldn't fancy detangling it on a regular basis unless she uses some sort of oil, spray or lotion to prevent that.

Standouts included the gutsy 'Wrong Side Of A Gun'; the stonesy like 'Come On' (that before you ask is not the Chuck Berry song Jagger et al covered); the bluesy 'Go Home And Die'; the slappin' 'Going Down Swinging' or the tongue in cheek 'Pussy Is Not A Dirty Word'.

NP 6.jpg

Here's a new one at a show that I have personally never seen before: a frontman drinking beer out of his cowboy hat.. well fear, we witnessed exact that tonight from Mr. Cartwright. Now I wonder if he washes it after or it simply just festers and gets smellier night after night?

NP 9.jpg
NP 8.jpg

Blaine worked really well with folk in here tonight and had them singing along to many of the songs such as crowd faves like 'Why Why Why' & 'Keep On Fucking' much to everyone's love and amusement.

There were plenty of cool onstage moves and talk about a top quality slick bit of bass playing that was definitely in the pocket with the drums making a wholesome and perfect rhythm unit. All in all it's as though you were in a backwoods bar in the deep south. It just needed the barbed wire fencing between the band and audience to really top it off like one of those legendary Ministry concerts or The Blues Brother's Film

My only moan is the fact that more people should have attended this show. Big respect to those who made the effort to come out tonight that people in the Sheffield area and beyond should not have missed at all.

Nashville Pussy played a killer top-notch show regardless of numbers finishing the night with 'Go Motherf*ck*r Go' with Ruyter yanking all the strings off her guitar to signify the end of their relentless energy-filled concert.
