Firegarden – 1649 (E.P.)
(S/R – 2017)
The Sheffield boys crank it up on this 4-tracker that was released a few years ago although I acquired very recently and features in the fold-out of the CD, live photos by Mal Whichelow & Luke Jennings.
At the time, Firegarden consisted of Jake Mann (Guitar/Vocals), Andy Gotteri (Keyboards), Chris Heald (Bass/Backing Vocals) & Ashley Tuck (Drums) but of course, that changed later and again after that. If you require cracking Prog Rock then this is where its at with songs like 'Borderline' that has more in common with Deep Purple than Madonna (sorry, had to go there) or the opening live fave 'Ride The Storm' that's always a pleasure to the ears indeed.
Then there's the superb title track '1649' with one hell of a great keyboard solo to be had – think Jon Lord & more! Then there's the funkyish turns Eastern sounding 'Queen' with is Egyptian sounding vocal section from Ferret of the band Skyligers.
Piping hot stuff!
8/10
