Eric Bass Presents I Had A Name

(S/R - 2025)
(Genre: Modern Alternative Metal)
Eric Bass is the part of the multi-platinum band Shinedown. He has decided to spread his creative wings and deliver a debut solo project called ‘I Had A Name’.
I have been a fan of Shinedown since the late 2000’s and have seen them perform live on several occasions. They always deliver feel good, uplifting energy and positive messages to help their fans through dark times they may face in life. ‘I Had A Name’ is Neurodivergence mental health, rock opera. Suggesting some deep lyrical content might be on offer here and a similar vibe.
It is immediately evident that any fans of Shinedown will like this. The Majority of the album could easily be a new Shinedown release. For me, that’s a little disappointing as I never see the point in writing a solo project that’s similar to the band you are already known for. Isn’t it an opportunity to show another side of your abilities? That said, it is a decent listen and will appeal to those who like the style of Shinedown.
The opening two tracks offer a mix of Shinedown and Linkin Park, with ‘The New Gods of War’ offering plenty musical heft after a somewhat subdued opener sets the albums narrative.
There are hints of Nu-Metal and Pop Punk on ‘We Can’t Go Home’. Tracks like ‘Azalia’, ‘All Good Children – Our Guts’, ‘Dead Inside’ and ‘The Churches of the Dead’ highlight the clear Shinedown feel that Eric Bass leans towards. These being the stand out songs off this album for me.
Recommended for established Shinedown fans.
